I’m loving this so far. Ishiguro’s a fave but this one’s shaping up to be my fave of his! Set in post-Arthurian Britain, the whole story feels suffused in myth and magic while not feeling like fantasy. Beautiful old couple love story.

WAH OKAY!! under a cut because. oh god i talked so much. i didn't realize that was gonna happen oops.

actually the funny thing is i have so many things i'm really solid on abt this character except for her uhhh. name. my first thought was anita virosa joy as a shortened form of amanita virosa (we'll get to why) but there's already a character in unova named after amanita so it feels... weird... and then i was also thinking about shepard joy, bc i think shepherd/shepard is a sort of fun thing to call both her and the subway bosses, and also bc it sort of nods to the only unovans with a full canonical name, the harmonias, who are named after musical tones (ghetsis specifically is named after a tritone), as a reference to shepard tones. but then idk if i want to change anita.

and uh. oh god this post is gonna be 50% talking about names, fuck. but unovan names are generally three parts. they use the roman tria nomina, so it goes first name-last name-last name part 2. which is why AVJ/ASJ, and not just AV/AS or AJ. the majority of the time, the last last name denotes a branch of the family, generally stemming from one person who was notable enough to earn a new one.

anyway, the last part of her name is definitely Joy. this is... getting into the region of hcs where i always sort of stop and go "dude this is pokemon. where are we going with this." but anyway, Pokémon Center Nurses in this hc are also generally referred to as "Nurse Joy," like the anime nurses, because their actual legal name is, always, Joy. this is bc the Joy Nursing Order is very intense as an organization, and it's kind of a requirement to adopt the name as a symbol of dedication. this is also why they all look the same like, down to the hair. Nurse Joy is almost like a character you adopt during work hours. most regions just have the family name and personal name, so you'd be XYZ Joy or Joy XYZ, but since unova has three names, it's not uncommon to see people preserve one part of their family name alongside Joy. i guess she could also be joy shepard? hmm.

...anyway. so yeah. she's a pokémon center nurse! or, a retired one, by the time of bw. and the reason why i'm not sold on her being like their, birth mom? or "adopted through normal legal channels" mom? is i don't think she intended to have. kids. being a nurse joy is kind of a demanding job and she's also super single (albeit pretty extroverted with a large social circle, but not really anyone that's like, coparent-with-me close). this is one of those things i keep going back and forth about, but right now what i'm thinking is that maybe the twins were originally the kids of friends of hers, who were very not prepared for having twins or kids as uhh. demanding. as they were. it might have originally been a temporary thing, where said friends went "hey anita i'm sooo super sorry to do this to you but can you watch them for a while while we uhhhhh leave. thx." and then she was like fucka you i'm keeping them. and they were fairly young but not like, babies at that time, probably somewhere in the 8-12 range. but this is all maybe things. if this IS the scenario, i think they're still vaguely in touch with those people (bc extended family interactions with other bw chars maybe) but probably don't consider them family. anita is their mom, thanks.

outside of being a nurse and their mom, her main hobby is pokemon fostering/rehab. she does both. her home's always overrun with little guys. she'll take more or less any of them, as long as they fit physically in her home lmao, but SPECIFICALLY she really likes poison types. her main partner's probably an amoonguss. (this is why the amanita virosa connection.) her one major deviation from the Nurse Joy Uniform is all of the bandaids and such because her hands & arms are perpetually fucked up. it's fine tho. she's used to it. a small price to pay for poison type.

relatedly i think the garbodor on the subway boss teams is actually from her originally. one of her major life goals has been a campaign to get larger unovan cities to shift from trubbish eradication efforts & perceiving them as pests towards actually treating them as worker pokemon, and giving them better care, with alolan grimer and muk and galarian weezing being a major source of inspiration. garbage pokemon are a known phenomenon! if you treat them right they will not be deadly!! she's actually been making pretty good progress on this one, esp. after she retired and could devote more time to it, and esp. in nimbasa city for no reason in particular.

while a lot of it is their own personal thing, i think she also encouraged parts of the twins' specific attitude towards responsibilities and like, general life philosophy. like, "you always have a duty to work with the task or the problem that's in front of you, to improve things for the people around you," etc. which is also sort of a joy nursing order attitude but she takes it to heart and applies it to the rest of her life in a very specific way. and then they took that and put their own spin on it.

i think she lives in anville town, maybe? somewhere where she can have a big enough house and yard to have two kids and a rotating cast of pokes, so not the city, lol. she's close with them still, and they visit pretty frequently (it helps that it's so easy for them if she's in anville) and also sometimes have pokemon for her or will help rehome some of them. and then she's friends with quite a lot of the town, and has established favor exchanges with them (mostly consisting of "anita my purrloin has a cold" or "anita i have a cold") so she was able to lean on quite a few other people to help look after these twins she'd... acquired... when she was busy with work. although they would have probably also come in to the pokemon center with her sometimes!

aaaaaand that's pretty much the whole character brief i think! there are other more minor things but i don't want this to be a mile long, lol, and most of it is "idk maybe" stuff. if you read this the whole way uhhh. thanks! i hope you enjoyed. like i said i had a lot of thoughts about her lmao.

I almost always keep my music on shuffle, and given I have 880 songs in my usual playlist...no telling WHAT will pop up lmao. My full library is about 4,500 or so songs btw. Sweet, Spicy, or Savory: Sweet, definitely. I don't so much have a sweet tooth as have an entire set of sweet teeth lmao. Spicy + savory is also really good-- I grew up in Louisiana, so I love cajun cooking. We had a seafood gumbo for Christmas and it was so fucking good.

Relationship Status: Single, very aro/ace and have no interest in dating. Romance stories are fun when they don't involve me, personally. And that counts even more for the spicy stuff. Plus I have a lot of shit I'd need to work through before trying to date.

Last Thing Googled: Just a few minutes ago I was trying to figure out how to get Zoom to detect my second monitor's built-in webcam. I did not succeed.

The Incendium mod/datapack owns my soul now. I've become the primary source for its items on the Dreblr server, bc I sell them in my shop. My current goal is to collect at least one of every item. She's just Trias, she got off easy, could've been worse

Kyriakos Petrovic, it's an ok name, a little mouthful for new people but he likes it

3. How does their social personality differ from how they act when they’re alone?

She's more energetic around people, alone she's mostly just laying on the floor vibing. WIth people she's basically bouncing off the walls

In large groups of people he's pretty quiet unless he deems his input is necessary. He likes his alone time a lot

Silly Billy mode, crack jokes, laugh louder, try to impress the crush

He's very forthcoming, he's no kid and if he's interested he will let the subject know, get physically closer and talk more freely with them

She has tha One Type of smile that at least will immediately recognize as the "I'm fibbing" smile

His voice is pretty monotone to begin with, so if his intonation changes chances are he's leaving something out, he doesn't outright lie but it's called lying by omission

Deodorant, gunmetal, arctic ice, sports (every flavour of axe)

Salt and pine, tobacco if he's had a particularly rough night

Silky like all terenlasi, gentle waves

Used to be rough from all the mullet styling, now it's more smooth, when it's short there's a slight curl to it but as it grows longer it straightens

His ears twitch when he's deep in thought and furrowing his brows. He's also an incurable manspreader bc he used to be the cool punk dude who owned every room he walked into and he never quite unlearned that

Anything, but I associate neon green with her

Be goofy together, be physically close, continue doing stunts to impress the other

Small touches, helping to take of the armor, just sitting together quietly (he misses his battle husband very much)

Kinda hard to see where she is looking with the visor and all black eyes tbh, but she is making pretty intense eye contact, with all four eyes

He does maintain an eye contact when talking one on one, if addressing a group his gaze will dart all across

Growing up didnt really have a family other than trainers and fellow assassin preschoolers, got some weird and fucked up ideas bout the world from there that did permanent harm to her psyche (she might unpack all of that sometime and completely break down bc she never had a family like everyone else)

Hardworking, proud, looking out for the people who dont have noble birthright etc, he was just some farmtown boy once

15. Are their greatest flaw and their greatest strength related and in what way? (ie very caring and helpful but a doormat, or very observant and shrewd but often paranoid)

The greatest flaw is that she struggles to take things seriously until it becomes too late. The greatest strength that once she does take things seriously shes very passionate

Related strengths and flaws would be his experience, in his 160+ years he's seen the best and worst, met all kinds of people and gained so much knowledge. But at the same time that time has forced him to let go of things he wouldn't have wanted and all that causes a deep sadness in him

16. How has their childhood affected the way they view an aspect of their life (people, education, society, themselves, etc)?

"wym you didn't have a dagger at age 5". She has a bit wonky sense of reality and is only good at few things

Grew up in a farming town, not the poorest, but not the richest by far, his parents were modest and hardworking folk. He was very much expected to stay in the village and find a job after school but he was So Smart he got into the best magic school on the continent. While he fared better than his peers back home he never forgot where he came from

At first his intrest in you was based purely on you quidditch skill

You were one of the most talented chasers he had ever come in contact with

You suddenly made the Hufflepuff team a threat

Gets kind of fired up when he loses to you and by kind of fired up, I mean completely pissed off

What makes it worse is your so chill about it

He take quidditch more serious than he would anything else but you seem to be in it just for the fun

So when you score point after point on him while smiling and laughing he can't help but feel rage build in his stomach

He lands on the ground with full intent to tell you the fuck off after a game is over only to have you turn around and give smile so wildly his mind went blank, had your eyes always been that pretty?

You stuck out your hand and told him he was really good, saying that you enjoyed the competition

Shadows Rising: A Reaction Post

Short, mostly non-spoilery version:  I liked it overall.  I give it a solid B, maybe a B+.

I was disappointed in how little Nathanos and/or Sylvanas content there was, but I think proclamations of the ship’s doom are premature.  

I’m intrigued by the first rumblings of new character development for certain characters, especially Anduin, Alleria and Turalyon.

I was rooting for Talanji so much.  She’s great. Zekhan is a cinnamon roll too pure for this world.  Sira was kind of boring. Fairshaw is so darn heartwarming I can’t stand it. I like Bwonsamdi more now. The lack of Wrathion is unsurprising but unfortunate. Nothing new with Tyrande but she’s already poised for major development in Shadowlands.

Much longer, spoilery version below.

This ended up being more of a ramble than an essay, but there’s a lot of disjointed thoughts pinging around in my head, so let’s dive in.

Overall, I enjoyed Shadows Rising.  Was it the best book ever?  No.  Not even the best Warcraft book ever.  But it was an enjoyable read.  It’s always a treat to get into the heads of characters we mostly know in passing from in-game events.  There are internal, emotional beats that cannot easily be explored in the game, and the books are a way to build the world and the characters in a more introspective, slow-paced manner.  I like that.  (That’s not to say there are no action scenes, because there definitely are.)

Talanji, Jaina, Zekhan, and Anduin were all written well and sympathetically.  Maiev’s only in a couple scenes, but she felt off to me.  Nathanos was very in-character, in all his snide, sour glory.��  Flynn and Mathias are great together.

The pacing was fine.  The descriptions were good, and it all felt grounded in the game world (i.e. landmarks, ambiance, the ridiculous amount of stairs in Daz’alor...)  Each of the Horde leaders got a moment or two in the spotlight.  Despite a fair amount of chapters about Anduin, Alleria, Turalyon, and Jaina, it still felt like a Horde-centric book to me.  Not that that’s a bad thing.

Prologue:  Gayness detected on page 8!  And it’s even something I kind of inadvertently predicted.  In my reaction post for Before the Storm I wrote, “ In this book alone, it would have been so easy to have that blacksmith bringing a helmet as a gift to his long-lost Forsaken husband instead of friend.”  That’s basically what we have here.  I don’t know if they were married, and neither were blacksmiths, but the Westfall moonshiner describes one of the Forsaken slain in Arathi as “the best man I ever knew and loved.”  Tada!  See how easy it was?  Add Jago x Wilmer to the growing list of LGBT rep in Azeroth.  (Even if they’re super minor characters in the long run, it’s still great to see.)

There might be some kind of parallel to be drawn between Alleria failing Anduin (by not finding/killing Sylvanas) and Nathanos failing Sylvanas (by not killing Bwonsamdi) but my brain is too overloaded from binge-reading to articulate it right now.  Both failed their king or queen, but both were also given nearly impossible tasks. 

Alleria and Turalyon are definitely being set up as antagonists.  We are clearly supposed to side with Jaina on this, and be uncomfortable (if not outright horrified) at their torture methods.  It’s especially disturbing how they use their respective void and light powers to accomplish their goals.  I mean, on one hand it’s great that both sides of the great cosmic divide can work together, and their marriage seems stronger than it was for awhile there, but yeesh...can you not torture people?  I know, ends justify the means, slippery slope, greater evil, blah blah, but still...that’s not okay.  It’s yet another sign that the Light is not necessarily good (or the void necessarily evil).

I welcome conflict within the Alliance, though.  That’s been the Horde’s thing for long enough.  Time to see how the blue side deals with its rifts.

In chapter 2 Nathanos is annoyed when a dreadtick flies by his head.  What, was it too similar to a bird for his liking?  Heh. 

All that time in Nazmir, and we didn’t get to see a single crawg!  Harumph.

It took three chapters and 39 pages to finally get something from Nathanos' perspective, and he was much more scarce going forward than I had hoped.  The bits we did get from his perspective were great and in-character, but I wanted to get into his head more.  Most of his scenes were from the POV of Sira or the troll villain instead, and while Apari was a good character I find Sira to be pretty one-dimensional. 

I kind of got paternal vibes from Nathanos toward Sira, though.  He was like, “I’ve been undead a lot longer than you; I know how to handle the bloodlust and such.  Get it out of your system at appropriate times but learn to control yourself.  There’s more to (un)life than slaughtering people.”  She herself, though, was just “Rawr, I hate everything and want to kill anything that moves.”  I mean, I get that she’s been through some traumatic stuff, but I didn’t find myself invested in her at all.

Page 42, as a bunch of trolls are about to be slaughtered:  "Hungry birds circled, expectant of a big meal, and Nathanos so hated to disappoint."  WHAT?  Nathanos wanted to do something nice for BIRDS?  I know, the phrasing fits with his dry, sarcastic sense of humor, but considering the running joke about him hating birds, it still made me go, “Huh?”

Chapter 5 (and later on, as it turns out):  Zekhan having a soft spot for kids is too precious for this world.

Page 51:  Thalyssra's eyes were "sparkling as she gazed across the room at Lor'themar."  Awwwwwww.   There was a surprising amount of ship fodder in this book overall, with Lor’themar x Thalyssra, Turalyon x Alleria, Fairshaw, and Zehkhan x Talanji all getting a moment or two (or more.) 

Chapter 6:  Anduin says, "Turalyon, take Alleria Windrunner and investigate these deaths."  You know, Alleria...YOUR WIFE?  I don't think you need to say her last name there, genius. 

While I’m being snarky about the editing, there were at least two times where the word “grieves” was used instead of “greaves.”  I spotted a couple other little things that a better editor (or one with more time, maybe it was rushed, I don’t know) would have caught.

Chapter 7:  More matter-of-fact LGBT inclusion for minor characters, this time a lesbian troll couple who want to marry.  Yes, thank you Blizzard, keep it up.

Chapter 8:  If you’re going to make the “Zappy Boy” nickname for Zekhan canon, having Bwonsamdi be the one to wink at the camera and use it was a great decision.  I can totally imagine him saying it.

We learn the name of Varok’s wife/Dranosh’s mother:  Remda.  Although I read elsewhere that the vision Zekhan saw of the Saurfang family in the afterlife was just Bwonsamdi’s B.S., it was still cool.

Chapter 13:  Nathanos wearing cologne?  Love it.  And it’s not even to cover up the rotting smell, because apparently his new body doesn’t stink like some undead; it just doesn’t smell like a living person, either, and some find it unnerving.  So he wears cologne.  That’s such a delightful little detail, and surprisingly considerate of him.

Sira complaining about bugs:  "We'll be eaten alive."  Uh no, you'd have to BE ALIVE for that to happen. Tsk.

Nathanos being called "the pale rider" makes me think of old cowboy movies.  Like, “You greenhorns better clear out; the Pale Rider is comin’ to town and there’s gonna be trouble.  Go wake up the sheriff.”  

Sira says that while on the voyage to Zandalar the dark rangers liked to tell the tale of how Nathanos was promoted to Ranger Lord by Sylvanas.  I'm surprised he lets them gossip like that!  His quests in vanilla made it seem he wanted to keep those parts of his past on the down-low, at least from the player.

Chapter 14:  Thrall's second kid is Rehze.  *blink*  Reh-zee?  Rez?  Ruh-zay?  I guess she’s not named after anyone.  After he named his son Durak (sort of after Durotan) I assumed he’d continue the pattern with kid #2.  Maybe she’s named after one of Aggra’s relatives.  (Later I read on Wowpedia that the author actually said she dislikes the “fan service” trend of naming children after other characters so she just picked a random orcish name.  I don’t think it’s fan service, because lots of real-life people do it, but okay.  Fair enough.)

Chapter 16:  Zekhan starting to clap at Talanji's speech and then stopping and shrinking back when he realized no one else was applauding was so freaking adorable.

Chapter 17:  Fairshaw, full steam ahead!!!  Their chemistry is everything I hoped it would be.  Learning a little about Flynn’s tragic past was both fascinating and heartbreaking.  (We learned his mom’s name: Lyra Fairwind.  R.I.P.)

Chapter 18:  Proodmoore keep has a gallery with floor to ceiling oil paintings of the Proudmoore family, extended family, and beloved friends.  It now includes Anduin.  I can’t help thinking that, in a different timeline, Arthas’ portrait would have been there.

Will wonders never case?  Ji Firepaw actually gets to do stuff!!!  GASP!

"Thrall understood that to other humans Wrynn was said to be pleasing-looking, but to the orc, Anduin simply looked like a small, pink boy swallowed by clunky armor."  So it’s canon that Anduin is good-looking in-universe.  But LMAO at Thrall’s description.

Chapter 22:  From Shaw’s POV, "These odds ranked pretty low...  Maybe just above the time he had relied completely on a shoddy network of spies embedded in a cheese business."  OMG leave Elling Trias alone!  He did his best!  LOL

Shaw wanting to hang out in a mountain meadow and whittle bird calls (perhaps even with a special someone) was so touchingly normal.  That’s the kind of characterization that the books are so much better at than the game.

I actually like Bwonsamdi more after reading this.  Not that I disliked him before, but I didn’t have a strong sense of him due to not playing Horde as much in BFA.  He’s a well-done gray character:  not good, not evil, insightful but a smartass, part of the great cycle, out for himself but also taking his duties seriously (saving troll souls from the Maw.) 

I’m not entirely sure that we needed as much from Thrall’s POV as we got.  I mean, sure, he’s a familiar character with ties to a lot of others, so it was easy to drop him into situations, and his ties to Jaina made cross-faction communication easier, but he didn’t seem as relevant to the lore of Zandalar and the Shadowlands as some other characters.

Maiev seemed OOC, especially in the Stockades scene.  I know one of the themes of the book was “people change,” and I suppose I should be happy that she has a more moderate viewpoint nowadays, dialing back the Lust For Vengeance Meter from eleven to maybe a five or a six, but it didn’t feel like Maiev.  Especially because her message of “maybe don’t go overboard with this vengeance thing” was aimed at Tyrande, of all people, someone who Maiev has had quite legitimate reasons to dislike for a very, very long time.  I could see her maybe mellowing out a little in front of fellow Wardens, but Tyrande?  Eh, it didn’t feel right to me.

No surprises from Tyrande in this.  She’s still steely cold, vengeance-obsessed, consumed by anger.  Not that I blame her, but it’s not healthy.  I know we’ll be exploring her situation more in Shadowlands, so this was more of a reminder/reinforcement of where she is right now.  It was kind of funny how Thrall, Baine and Calia tried to talk to her and she just gave them the stink eye and the silent treatment, though.

I’m fine with Anduin exploring his dark side a bit more, as long as they don’t go overboard with it.  I like him as an earnest, good-hearted character.  It’s only natural to test your limits, though, especially in times of crisis.  Power corrupts, and he’s got plenty of it, both politically and magically, so I can understand Jaina and Mathias being a bit uneasy.  Add to that the increasing themes about the Light not being as benevolent as we originally assumed, and there’s potential for interesting plot there.  In the end I want Anduin to stay firmly on the side of good, empathy, compassion, etc., but a deviation into the shadows along the way isn’t a bad thing for the story.

I imagine every single person who read about Anduin sneaking off to the Lion’s Pride Inn in Goldshire smirked about that place’s reputation on certain RP realms.  I was surprised he didn’t find scantily-clad elves and draenei dancing on the furniture.  And then it turns out Jaina was there, too.  Awkward!

Why, oh why couldn’t we have had a scene with Anduin and Wrathion hanging out (incognito, of course) in a tavern?  That was their thing in MoP, and now with Anduin desperately wanting to get away from his duties for awhile and soak up some tavern ambiance it would have been perfect.  Let Anduin show off the best taverns Stormwind has to offer.  Even though Wrathion was as much a guest at the Tavern in the Mists as Anduin was, he acted like he owned the place and Anduin was his guest, so let them turn the tables and have Anduin play host.  There could be jokes about how he better not punch Wrathion again or they’ll get kicked out for starting a bar fight.  They could have still seen the young recruits, ran into Jaina, etc.  But Anduin really needs a buddy to hang out with right now.  

And you can’t tell me after Nya’lotha fell Wrathion just disappeared again and never at least visited Stormwind to tell grandiose tales about how he stabbed an Old God, it was so heroic, and he wasn’t scared at all, and those mean adventurers were so quick to believe he’d been corrupted, but he hadn’t, and did you know Azshara was there?  And then N’Zoth almost won but KERPOW LAZERS and oh Anduin you should have seen it, etc. etc. etc.

I should be used to being disappointed about Wrathion’s absence by now, but there are SO MANY MISSED OPPORTUNITIES!

Sigh.  Moving on.

Being exposed to spoilers meant I wasn’t fooled by it, but it was still a deft bit of writing to have the dark rangers drink poison when cornered by Horde soldiers, then mention Nathanos having a vial in his coat, which he drinks when defeated--making the unspoiled reader assume he’s killing himself--only for it to be a kind of liquid hearthstone attuned to Sylvanas.  Had I not known that he survived the book I would have freaked out there.

So, like, was Bolvar just sitting there on the ground awkwardly eavesdropping while Sylvanas and Nathanos talked/argued?  Or did he use that time to sneak away unnoticed?  LOL

Which brings us to the epilogue that’s caused so much hand wringing and wailing from my fellow Blightrunner shippers.  It wasn’t the openly sentimental interaction between them that I had hoped for, but I honestly didn’t read it as the doom of the ship.  A bump, at worst.

[If you’re not interested in the relationship between Nathanos and Sylvanas, or if you’re one of those people who simply hate his character, you can skip the rest of this post.]

First of all, Sylvanas had just broken the Helm of Domination.  That was a hugely significant thing to do, both for her personally and in the cosmic scheme of things.  Her state of mind at that moment had to have been in a turmoil.  So if she was a little distracted and tense, I think that’s quite understandable.

Second, I saw other fans being upset that she threatened/wanted to strike him.  That’s not how I read it at all.  “Sylvanas could strike him, scream and hollow out his soul, but it would not correct the failing.”  She’s not saying she wants to do that, just that she could.  The instinct to lash out in violence is ingrained in all the undead; death knights have to do it or they go mad.  So for her mind to go there in a moment of high emotion seems natural to me.  She doesn’t actually attack him or verbally/physically threaten him.  People say things like “I could have killed my brother for eating the last slice of cake” or “I could’ve strangled my co-worker when she spoiled the ending of the movie” and it’s not literal.

Third, she doesn’t say “go away, I never want to see you again.”  She says “Go where you will, Nathanos, but do not be idle” and “I expect you will return to me with means to prevent [Bwonsamdi’s] meddling.”  So essentially she’s saying, “Fine, go home, regroup, come up with Plan B, and if it’s not possible to destroy Bwonsamdi at least concentrate on countering him.”  Also note that she still considers the operation to be theirs, not just hers:  “This was a blow, but one she felt sure they could overcome.”  That tells me she expects to work with him in the future.

Fourth, and granted this is before she learns of his failure, but she’s clearly happy to have him there when he first arrives.  “’My champion,’ Sylvanas purred.  ‘Your timing could not be better.  Tell me of your victory as we take these first steps together.’”  She wanted to cross into the Shadowlands with him at her side.  Hell, that’s bridal imagery...crossing the threshold together, and all that.  The only reason she tells him to go is because his work isn’t done and she still needs him on Azeroth.  But she explicitly says “I expect you will return to me.” 

Fifth, in the line from her POV about how “the unjust ladder of their lives must be dismantled,” the “they” she’s referring to is all of the denizens of Azeroth, true, but I think there’s also a tinge of bitterness there as she looks back on her own life, and her life with Nathanos.  Destiny has not been kind to either of them.

Sixth, she says “My path lies ahead” as she prepares to cross into the Shadowlands.  It’s a reminder of the scale of the forces she is trying to manipulate.  When faced with the potential fates of all the souls in the universe, her own regrets are insignificant.  She can’t stay on Azeroth any longer, even if some part of her does want to just chill out on a beach somewhere with Nathanos and watch his blighthounds chase seagulls.  She thinks “It would not be easy, but then, her mission required great sacrifice.”  Like leaving him behind.

Even this part can be interpreted different ways:  “She heard the note of hope in his voice, fragile as a fledgling dropped from the next.”  Putting aside the humor of comparing bird-hating Nathanos to a fledgling, we don’t get a value judgment about the comparison.  Sylvanas doesn’t think about him sympathetically, wanting to protect him in a vulnerable moment, but she also doesn’t think, “Geez, what a pathetic weakling.”  It goes back to that bit in Warbringers about how she can’t kill hope.  And she can’t.  Here, again, no matter how bleak things are, no matter how displeased she is at his failure, he still has hope.  And she needs that, whether she believes it or not.

When she “flicked her fingers, as if ridding herself of a speck of muck” that can be interpreted as her thinking of him in a derogatory way, but she was also talking about Bwonsamdi in the same breath so I can choose to believe that’s who she was being dismissive of.

I don’t know.  I get that some of the language is discouraging.  She describes him as having “blubbering lips” and she’s definitely not happy with him.  But these two have been through a lot, and their bond has remained strong.  I’m sure this isn’t their first fight, or the first time he’s disappointed her.  This isn’t the end for them.  Just another bump on a very long highway they’ve traveled together.

Pre-throuple relationship set in Daeran’s first quest in the game, with Ariadne and Woljif exploring (sneaking around) Heaven’s Edge, and all three of them exploring a certain fascination for each other. The sweet tension is palpable. Beautifully written from Ariadne’s and Woljif’s POV as they find out more about Daeran’s tortured past. Funny and full of great dialogue with the three of them teasing each other but underneath it all starting to care. Their dynamic is always a huge treat, a personal fave.

Ship: Cleo/Queen Galfrey

Not only does this fic give a heartbreaking look into Queen Galfrey’s lonely life as the figurehead of over a century’s worth of Crusades, for me it’s THE demon path fic. Cleo is wonderful. From barbarian rage to demonic rage, in denial about more than one thing. This fic has given me goosebumps more than once. I need them to have their happily ever after – no two people ever deserved it more. Dragonologist’s prose always knocks it out of the park.

She is citadel born and raised for a hispanic family, doesn’t know spanish however. She was a rowdy kid and did average in school so she opted for a more physical field of work first in the navy and then as a bounty hunter

In his homeworld, a larger city, he had a decent childhood, nothing traumatic but his family was lower middle class so it wasnt dancing on rose petal either. He absolutely tanked his school tho

What’s their family like?

They’re good people, she was pretty hard on them due to her temperament (teen zoe was a nightmare), her dad is earth born and mom from citadel

Well mannered and very polite, the neighborhood nice parents with rowdy kid

In the Navy she reached the rank of lieutenant, in the bounty hunters she holds the rank of commander and title of milf

He’s not officially part of anything, though he is a recognized vigilante/man for hire on the outer rim

She’s there to support the younger generation of bounty hunters and to entertain the office with reno with their no limits old friends acting like a married couple shenanigans

He was put into this earth to love his wife and to keep nasty people on their toes, run into shyn and trias for endless entertainment possibilities

In citadel, she has a decent flat, three rooms, office, bedroom and guest room if her son visits

On outer rim, on the outskirts where the rent is cheap but it comes with the cost of having sketchy neighbors. His flat is pretty run down where every time you turn on the lights you could consider standing on a rubber mat, and where hot water comes out 50% of the time you want it

How do they eventually die?

Old age or some health complications, she isn’t in active duty anymore so going out in a blaze wont happen

Chapter 1: In this one it would just be the case that Sayaka’s plan worked out and she managed to kill Leon. She might have even succeeded with it and could have blamed everything on Makoto, but she had no idea that Kyoko is a detective and quickly solved it, since her plan wasn’t that good. The cast would have been harsh towards her, since she was the first to kill, had full on planned it and also tried to blame her only friend. The only one who would have been on her side is Makoto himself

Chapter 2: I don’t think that Chihiro would have killed Mondo to keep his secret hidden and out of a jealous moment of rage. However it could happen out of an argument, where Mondo instead of killing Chihiro just flips out and looses it. When going too far with his words, Chihiro lost himself for a moment and killed Mondo on the heat of the moment (Just like Mondo did) Chihiro would have been too shaken to cover up the crime and probably just ran, however Byakuya came in and changed the sceneThe reason why Chihiro probably didn’t come clear was out of fear of dying, unlike Mondo who wanted to protect Chihiro’s secret

Chapter 3: I think Hifumi would be the killer in this one, where he is so sure that Taka is the one who stole Alter Ego. Celest was probably still planning and hid the laptop, but before she could move, Hifumi lost it and bashed Taka’s head in. He still had his whole plan set up with pinning it on Hiro, however without the confusion part. Celeste, who was keeping watch on them and saw everything, now had a problem because one the first killer would be allowed to leave if there were two, so she had to either kill Hifumi who was searching for Alter Ego or come up with another plan. However to avoid that her plan gets stopped, she decides to take care of Hifumi. First it worked, since the other was quite loyal to her. Until he found out that she had Alter Ego and realised what was going on, so he used his hammers and based Celeste‘s head in as well, before pretending to be attacked as well by justice hammer 1 and barely surviving

DR2:

Chapter 1: This one was hard since Imposter is such a pacifist, so I had to change them a bit. Nagito probably chose Imposter to let them in on his plan since they were trying so hard to keep everyone together. This led them to panic about the fact that the others were apparently so open about killing and they didn’t want to die themselves. So they jumped the gun and decided to kill Nagito first to get away from it all. However to their misfortune something went wrong and Teruteru ended there were Nagito was supposed to be and ended up being killed

Chapter 2: Fuyuhiko was probably still the one to finish the game and find out that Mahiru was involved in the murder of his younger sister. However he didn’t talk with Peko about it, since he wants to keep her out of the Yakuza business, and so he sends the filed to Mahiru with an invite to a private talk about it. However Mahiru completely misunderstands this and is sure that this is a trap to kill her in revenge, since Fuyu isn’t really the nicest person and also a Yakuza known for killing people. So she tries to trick him and get rid of him way before the meetingHowever Peko, who noticed that something was wrong with Fuyu, keeps a watch on him from the distance, which is a thing that Mahiru notices and they end up in a fight. Let’s say that due to the fact that Peko was about to meet the other girls to go to the beach, she is only in her bikini and doesn’t have her sword with her (because having it makes no sense), which leads to her being without a weapon unlike Mahiru who has the bat. However since this wasn’t her plan at all to kill Peko, she tries to then quickly pin it onto Fuyu who had no idea what happened only further down

Chapter 3: For this one let’s take Hiyoko, who is the one to remember everything due to the despair disease. However she was able to hide it just like Mikan was. First she sneaked into the hospital when she knew that no one was there and tricked Ibuki and took her to the Titty Typhoon to strangle her. However what she didn’t anticipate was that Mikan wasn’t able to sleep with worry over Nagito and decided to check up on him again, and while she was downstairs anyway she then checked the other rooms. To only notice in horror that Ibuki was missing, so she quickly began looking for her which led to her walking in as Hiyoko just killed Ibuki, who then also killed MikanWhen found out later on, everyone thought she lost it due to grief over Mahiru, however Hiyoko just laughs and tells them that she simply wanted to kill them because it was fun and that Mikan was just a nice bonus. She would then haunt the others for nothing everything they have forgotten, before happily going to her execution and leaving them all behind with only more questions to plague them

Chapter 5: For AI Chiaki to end up as the one being killed, it could have two reasons. Nagito tried to kill everyone at once but ended up only killing Chiaki or Chiaki tricked Nagito into killing her. Since chap5 is always the one to be the most twisted, I would go with the latter. So let’s say that the Junko AI/virus was able to go into Chiaki’s code and make her want to kill for “the greater cause” and not see reasonable. So instead of trying to save everyone, she tries to get rid of Nagito who was threatening to kill them all. However since she can’t kill, she needed to trick him into doing it. Her plan wouldn’t rely on luck that much, but with way more logic to make sure that Nagito it the one to kill her by accidentWhen revealed everyone would loose it that she of all people would go to such lengths just to kill Nagito by torturing herself and making him kill her. Nagito however would totally loose it since he was planning on saving Chiaki, whom he had now killed

Chapter 1: With them it’s quite easy. Since both tried to get the mastermind, let’s say that Rantaro has set a trap to get them. However Kaede was there too fast, while Shuichi was looking for help. When they got there, they only found Kaede on the floor. Rantaro would have come forth during the trial, but he tried to find the mastermind till he knew he couldn’t keep on going(Also imagine a DR game where the protag is the first victim. Just the moment where you run with them into a room and instead of a transition there is black with a bit of text and before you know it, you are in the POV of someone else who also runs inside and you see the protag dead on the floor. Now that would be a shock)

Chapter 2: Seriously, I can’t think of anything that would make Ryoma kill Kirumi...

Chapter 3: As I often say, I would have loved to see Angie as a blackened who got so delusional with her student council that she would kill to keep peace. So when Tenko tried to stop her and her student council from oppressing the students, she killed her. Korekiyo then genuinely wanted to try out the seance to talk to Tenko (no serial killer story here) and ask her who it was. However Angie didn’t like it one bit and so she let them do it after an explanation and used her knowledge about the crawling space to get into the room. She then followed Kiyo’s voice and during the last verse, killed him silently before following the salt back to the crawling space and escaping. Since she waited for Kiyo to end his chanting it took the others a bit longer to realise the silence from him and then find their way to light the candles to see what is going on, giving Angie enough time

Chapter 4: In this Kokichi’s and Gonta’s plan failed and Miu ended up killing Gonta instead of Kokichi. While Kokichi knows everything after seeing it, the whole tria would be about “one word against the other” where the others would need to decide if they trusted Miu or Kokichi more as they prove who is telling the truth

Chapter 5: The same plan as before, however when Kokichi is about to give Kaito the antidote, Kaito refuses since he knows he won’t make it long enough due to his afwul health. So Kokichi takes on the role of survivor of them two and kills Kaito, before he tries to end the killing game before he bleeds to death from all the wounds he suffered from Maki and making her a blackened as well
